I was devastated for a very long time when I realised my name (Ilana) actually means “The Great Tree” in Hebrew. Perhaps this was because of the direct translation into Afrikaans, Die Groot Boom, which could be associated with so many things on the wrong side of the railway. Or perhaps I just did not wanted to be personalised with anything B.I.G. After many ways of looking at it and debating the possibilities, I am actually honoured to be The Great Tree.
We went to Nature’s Valley this weekend and stopped at the Big Tree on our way home. Huge, isn’t it?
