Hit the road…I think it was Jack?

Music is a powerful thing. I remember making cassettes for every road trip I ever went on. Making CDs was hardly ever as much fun, and now, quickly copying a couple of mp3’s onto a flash disk ruins the entire sentiment about it. I am not going to have a verbal vomit on how video killed the radio star, but I would like to share my 50 favourite musical escorts I plan to take on my next road trip.

  1. Alannah Myles – Black Velvet (because I think it is an awesome song)
  2. Korn – All in the Family (because it’s funny and makes me happy)
  3. Cornershop – Brimful of Asha (because it makes me feel like tying up my hair in two ponies and be a kid again)
  4. Waterboys – The whole of the moon (because it is a classic)
  5. 50 cent – in da club (because it instantly puts me in a good mood)
  6. Fokofpolisiekar – Ek dink aan jou (as dit reën) (because I love s(inging)houting with them “ek is nie meer lief vir jou nie”)
  7. Foo Fighters – Monkey Wrench (because it manages anger well)
  8. Paris Hilton – Nothing in this world (because I am a chick)
  9. Counting Crows – Sullivan Street (because it is my all-time favourite song)
  10. Meatloaf – Rock and roll dreams come true (because I changed the words to fit my needs)
  11. Lily Allen – The Fear (because “everything’s cool as long as I’m getting thinner”)
  12. Lady Sovereign – I’m still human (because I think it is one of the best covers ever done)
  13. U2 – With or without you (because you can’t leave without it)
  14. Nine Inch Nails – You make it go away (because it makes me happy)
  15. Kris Kristofferson – On the Sunday morning sidewalk (because I can relate to it…sometimes)
  16. Kimya Dawson – My Rollercoaster (because home is where the heart is)
  17. Kings of Leon – I want you (because I think it is a super sexy song)
  18. Muse – Butterflies and Hurricanes (I truly believe it was actually an ode to the graphic designer)
  19. Moist – Leave it alone (it makes me feel as if I am flying)
  20. Remy Zero – Fair (because it lets my mind wanders and keeps me quiet for my fellow-passengers’ sake)
  21. Neil Diamond – I am I said (I think it is one of the best songs ever written)
  22. System of a Down – Toxicity (the memories are priceless)
  23. Frou Frou – Breathe In (because it is awesome)
  24. Tegan and Sarah – Where does the good go (because I get to sing along – loudly)

  37. Joe Purdy – The City (’cause it keeps on goin’)
  38. Guns N Roses – Paradise City (ooh, yeah)
  39. The Killers – Indie Rock and Roll (because it rocks)
  40. Simon and Garfunkel – Mrs Robinson (because everyone knows a good song when they hear it)

  42. Greenday – When I come around (I might as well add the entire Dookie disc on here)
  43. Beth Hart – Summer’s Gone (another one written for the road)
  44. MGMT – Time to pretend (because they have some pretty good ideas here)
  45. Butthole Surfers – Pepper (because it is needed)
  46. Radiohead – Creep (’cause I’m a wei-hheeer-do)
  47. Eagles – Hotel California (because you can never leave)
  48. Counting Crows – Holiday in Spain (because I want an engine driver in a bunny suit)
  49. Blink 182 – All the small things (because we all love people who leave us roses by the stairs)
  50. Creedence Clearwater Revival – Have you ever seen the rain (you thought we were leaving without them, hey?)

I would love to know who your musical companions are when you hit the road, Jack.

Why not also add Texas – Say What You Want … (because it’s just a chilled and awesome song for road trips) 🙂

You can certainly see your skills in the work you write. The world hopes for even more passionate writers like you who aren’t afraid to say how they believe. At all times go after your heart..
